rivers done

At last we have a milestone. The rivers are now updated and names added. It is interesting that so many of the rivers are given different names by different publishers. We understand there is the problem of language -basque, gallego and castiliano but it is more muddled then that. Not sure how to check this besides finding someone who lives beside the river and asking them. Slightly time consuming and not very easy. Maybe next time we do the camino donkey!
In the end we gave the goverment topos the final say. Not that we trust them either but we decided that it would be better to go with  an official source and blame them when things are wrong. Always pass the buck!
It was hard in Galicia because some of the older maps from the 1970’s or earlier do not have river names! Unbelievable!
Now to start work on the urban sprawl. Once that is done then we will have broken the back of the project. Famous last words yet again.

Friends in the know

Our friend Johann is an artist who’s currently teaching colour theory. He had some great comments about the colours in the map & we’ve tweaked the contour colours a little to take his advice into account.

Now all we have to do is do the grunt work: lots of tweaking, proofing, checking. This weekend, we finally feel we’ve got things moving. Probably not fast enough for the friends and family who are walking the camino this spring & summer. But slow & steady & the map will be out by late autumn.

At 4am made the decision to call every thing a Rio instead of a Arroyo and the rest. I know this is not technically right but it uses less room and I don’t think it really matters. Maybe this will be something we will change in future editions.
The afternoon work session seems to have turned into a seista.
We keep hearing reports of people on the camino at the moment. The idea of a winter camino sounds crazy. I like the idea of wondering in the snow across the mesta. Our friend Daphne is off to do the Route de Norte soon. Maybe that would be the answer. That might be a good one for the next holy year. 2010!
