Latest look at the map

We’ve done the roads, and now we’re doing the urban areas. Here’s the latest look at what the map will look like. We’ve still yet to put in places names, symbols, and the camino itself. We’d love to get feedback on what we have so far.

roads done

Finally finished making the changes to all the roads. It looks loads better but what a hassle. We have to make a few more updates to the roads around Santiago and we need to double check road numbers but it more or less finished.
So now I feel we are back where we where in Feb before we decided to make all these changes. 3 months later we have a much better looking map but it still will not be out until later this year. Still hope to send it to the printers in Oct.
Now we have to do the urban sprawl bits and then we really will have cracked it.

daycare or no map

As time is getting more important if we want to have the map out for the 2008 season we decided to put the boys in daycare
one day week so we can get more done. We have found a really great one run by a kiwi couple who live 10min  bike ride away and there are only 4 kids. Not cheap but I think it will be worth it. The boys liked it the afternoon we spent there.

Had dinner with Daphne del Camino before she sets off to do the coastal route and seek her future on the camino. She has agreed to do some updating for us for the new third edition of Walking the Camino de Santiago which will hopefully be out early 2009. Getting ahead of ourselves a bit here but you have to plan ahead in this business. Hopefully the map will sell enough so we can publish the book again.

How accurate is googlemap?

Well now we are well and truely on the “road drawing” bus. A third of the roads are in the new format. Yeah! Progress!

To waste precious time I have been looking at Googlemap and wondering how accurate it is regarding the camino. So far it seems fairly good at a general level. It has most of the new road names and loads of waypoints.
The thing that bugs me though is that it lacks really good detail. You can zoom into @1000m elevation but after that all  you is get outlines. Everything goes fuzzy after that. So when you really need information you can not finds it because the detail is not there. I wonder when they will increase the detail because it must be available somewhere. It must be sitting on some military uber computer somewhere. In North America you can zoom into see people’s backyards! Why not in Spain?

The Google Earth Community links are sometimes very cool.
